El Escorial was the political center of the empire of Philip II. He founded a monastery with a great basilica, to be a "palace for God", but also a residence for himself and a beautiful library, as well as his tomb, and that of his parents, Charles I and Isabella of Portugal, and their families and successors.
Escorial Monastery opening hours:
Winter (October to March): Weekdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 to 18:00
Summer (April to September): Weekdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 to 20:00
(Tickets´sale closes one hour earlier)
