What you will discover
Discover why El Escorial is more than a monastery, with a guided introduction to Philip II’s palace, religious foundation and dynastic project.
The name monastery only tells part of El Escorial’s story. Philip II brought royal residence, religious life, a library and a dynastic burial place into one complex, creating a useful introduction to the ambitions and beliefs of sixteenth-century Spain.
The guided visit helps distinguish those functions rather than treating the building as a succession of rooms. Which sections can be entered depends on current access arrangements; religious services, works and official closures may alter the route.
