The Descalzas Reales connects Madrid with the women of the Habsburg dynasty and their religious patronage. Joanna of Austria founded the convent in 1557 in a former palace, leaving a site where court history and religious art are closely intertwined.
Its frescoes and tapestries based on designs by Rubens offer an introduction to those European connections. Entry is by guided visit under the monument’s arrangements; tickets, available language and the role of any accompanying guide must be confirmed before including it in your plans.
